Economy & Skills Partnership Overview

  • The Partnership first met under new chair (Dave Benstead) in June 2015 with revived membership including good representation from business as well as colleges and Council.
  • Goals for Economy and Skills agreed (using the Local Economic Assessment as an evidence base) in September 2015:

Goal 1 – To Increase the number of businesses in Oldham

  • Attracting more high value inward investments
  • Supporting our existing businesses to survive, stay, innovate and grow
  • Fostering enterprise culture, increasing the level of business start-ups

Goal 2 – To strengthen local partnerships between business, education and the community to better equip people to succeed in work

  • Support local educational provision to increase attainment and improve routes to progress to higher levels
  • Strengthen, effective and better co-ordinated responses to support those who need the most help to participate in education, training and employment and prevent worklessness
  • Utilise business networks and influence to maximise our local contribution to the GM economy
  • Understand and better align skills development to the labour market to meet business current and future needs

Goal 3 – Contribute to Oldham becoming a productive place with healthy, aspirational and sustainable communities

  • Maximise the social value and local economic benefit of local expenditure and investments
  • Provide access to local market information, advice and guidance to better inform life choices
  • Improve health and well being by facilitating access for all to art, sport, community learning and cultural activities
  • Celebrate and promote local success and good employment practice to inspire and embrace our growth ambitions; ensuring work pays and the social costs reduced
