Your invitation to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

You are invited to attend the council's Holocaust Memorial Day event which will take place on Tuesday 27th January 2009 at Gallery Oldham and will run from 11:00am - 11:30am.  The event will be led by the Worshipful the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Shoab Akhtar.

The event will remember all the victims of the Holocaust and all acts of genocide committed since the end of World War Two. The day of remembrance also gives the council the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to opposing prejudice, discrimination and racism in the present day wherever it occurs.

The theme for this year's memorial day is 'stand up to hatred', which will provide the opportunity for Oldham to promote the 'there's no place for hate in Oldham' campaign.

There will also be other commemorative events held on Tuesday 27th January 2009 at:

Shaw War Memorial at 9:45am, Royton Park at 10:30am and the annual Saddleworth Peace Movement Holocaust Memorial Day Vigil from 5:00pm at the Square, Uppermill.

More top marks for Oldham & Rochdale HMR

An independent inspection by the Audit Commission into how Housing Market Renewal in Oldham makes use of resources has scored the pathfinder as ‘performing strongly’.

The pathfinder is one of only three in the country to receive the highest mark available.

The study - the first of its kind by the Audit Commission - looked into the approaches the ten pathfinders take in handling resources, including achieving value for money.

The report praised the Oldham & Rochdale for successfully attracting more than £21 million private investment and a further £7 million from partners, equating to 24p of additional private investment for every pathfinder pound.

Pathfinder Director Alastair Graham said, “We take the responsibility of managing the resources we have very seriously, so are incredibly pleased that this has been recognised. The result mirrors the overall inspection we received from the Audit Commission last year.

“We were pleased that the report noted that we have a clear direction, and that by using resources effectively the Pathfinder has firm foundations to enable us to widen the choice of modern homes across neighbourhoods in Oldham and Rochdale."
