The progress of the Oldham Partnership has been celebrated at a national level, with the Oldham Partnership being recognised in the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards 2006 & 2007 and the Academy for Susatinable Communities (ASC) Awards 2007.
The Oldham Partnership initiated a programme of cultural activities across the Borough to build on the area’s rich cultural and performing heritage. The programme supports the Oldham Partnership’s strategic aims of strengthening community cohesion and improving the image of the Borough. The Art for All; All For Art programme was designed to increase the number of adults who participate in performing and visual arts through activities such as the Oldham Festival of Diversity, The Carnival Arts Programme, the Oldham Music Service and the Grange Arts Centre. The range of events attracted over nineteen thousand participants in the first year, 75% of which were over 16 years old.
The Academy for Sustainable Communities has short-listed the Oldham Partnership as one of only four finalists in this category. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on 7th June 2007, at the HAC Artillery Gardens, London. A copy of the submission is below:
The award recognises the growing importance of partnership working as the key vehicle to effectively tackle the long-term challenges faced by an area, and improve the quality of life for local residents. The Oldham Partnership’s award submission gave a snapshot of the range of programmes which are taking place across the Borough to improve the local quality of life. The submission also set these programmes in the context of the long-term strategic challenges that the Borough faces, such as community cohesion, employment, housing, and health, and how these underpin the entire work of the Oldham Partnership. Environmental, social, and economic sustainability is an underpinning objective of the Oldham Partnership, and was at the forefront of the planning process when the latest edition of the Community Strategy was being developed. This was recognised by the Local Government Chronicle Sustainable Communities Awards 2006, in which the Oldham Partnership won the Partnership Award for Sustainable Communities, sponsored by DEFRA. The judges said that the Oldham Partnership "was a great example of training and capacity building to help communities get involved in decision-making. It showed a level of evidence of partnership training that set it out from the competition."
The Oldham Partnership focused its work on two areas - sustainability, and building local communities. This is reflected in the award submission, a full copy of which is below:
